Welcome Fr Royston Davis - Please welcome Fr Royston who has come from Devon to cover the parish for the two weekends, 11th and 18th July, while Fr Dylan is on pilgrimage in France. Fr Royston is a retired priest of the Plymouth Diocese and lives in Tavistock.
Visiting confessor – On Saturday 17th July, there will be a visiting priest, Fr Royston Davis, here to hear confessions.
Retiring Collection this Sunday: Peter's Pence - This weekend, 18th July, we will have our annual Peter's Pence collection. (This collection was deferred from earlier in the year.) This collection gives financial support to the Holy Father’s work, as a sign of our sharing in the concern of the Successor of Peter, for the many different needs of the Universal Church and for the relief of those most in need.
Retiring Collection next Sunday: Day for Life - Next weekend, 25th July, is the annual Day for Life, with the retiring collection to support the various parts of the Bishops’ Conference work on Life issues. This is always an important work but has been particularly high profile in recent years with attempts to legalise euthanasia and create human-animal hybrid embryos. The need to keep pressure on the new government makes this an ongoing concern.
St Mary Magdalene - Thursday is the feast of St Mary Magdalene, one of the most prominent women in the Gospels. She is mentioned among the women who accompanied Christ and ministered to Him (Lk 8:2-3), where it is also said that seven devils had been cast out of her (Mk 16:9)). She also named as standing at the foot of the Cross and, in particular, is hailed by all 4 Gospels as the first recorded witness of the Resurrection. Western tradition has also identified her as the "sinner" of Lk 7:36-50 and as the sister of Martha and Lazarus (Lk 10:38-42; Jn11). In celebrating her feast we recall a central truth of the Christian religion: that a sinner and an outcast can come back to the Lord, and, more than this, can come to take a leading part in His Church.
Papal Visit - We now have details. We are invited to be pilgrims with the Holy Father. Each pilgrim will receive a pilgrim pass and a Pilgrim Pack. There are two events:
- Sunday 19th September 0930 at Birmingham. The beatification Mass of Cardinal Newman. We are allocated 10 seats on the coach but may be able to get more. The coach will probably be leaving at around 5am. THIS WEEK we will need the following details if you would like to go: name, address, postcode, contact number, email and special needs and a cheque made out to PRCDTR for £25. Please put these on the list at the back of the church.
- Saturday 18th September. Hyde Park prayer vigil, pm. There are no coaches, but the pilgrim pack will include an underground ticket. We will go by train from Salisbury which has a late train returning from London. We are asked to contribute £10 (to PRCDTR) towards this. One of those going will be asked to be the banner carrier, and will be given a picture and candle to bring back to the parish. We are again allocated 10 pilgrim places.
Please put your details on the forms in the porch – or in an envelope through my front door, together with a cheque. We have to send these details off before the end of the month.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel - Friday is the feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel. Many members of our congregation wear the traditional "Brown Scapular" around our necks -a practice that stems from today's devotion. Our Lady of Mt Carmel is the patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th century and they dedicated their chapel to Our Lady. In the 13th century Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, an Englishman who was then Prior General of the Carmelite Order. The Virgin appeared to him holding the brown Scapular in her hand, the garment that hangs down the front and back of a Carmelite, saying, “This is for you and yours a privilege; the one who dies in it will be saved.” The small brown scapulars that laity wear today are a form of this garment. As the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship sums up the devotion, the Brown Scapular is "an external sign of the filial relationship established between the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother and Queen of Mount Carmel, and the faithful who entrust themselves totally to her protection, who have recourse to her maternal intercession, who are mindful of the primacy of the spiritual life and the need for prayer."
Centenary Appeal Thank You - Fr Dylan writes in his absence: At the time of writing this, we don't know what the total will have been that was raised in the centenary appeal collection, however, in anticipation, can I thank you for your generosity. We have had over £1100 already donated before the collection properly started which is exceptionally generous and hopefully a sign of how much people are anticipating the celebration itself being a truly worthy event. Thank you again.
Job Vacancy – The Catholic Children’s Society (Plymouth) is looking to recruit an enthusiastic, energetic individual to identify fundraising opportunities on its behalf. Please see the poster displayed on the noticeboard for further details. This is a part time post, initially on a 12 month contract. Email ccs@prcdtr.org.uk for a job description and application form.
Book Recommendation - Jacques Philippe, In the School of the Holy Spirit (Sceptre Press, 2007), ISBN-10: 1594170533, 90 pages, £16 at www.amazon.co.uk
New Sacristans - I'd like to publicly thank Elizabeth Harrison for agreeing to take on the new role of being co-coordinating sacristan, assisted by Annabel Allhusen, Bridget Rossano, Caroline Cardozo, Pepi Hughes, and Violet Hayden. If you are willing to help with some part of the sacristy work, some laundry, cleaning, ironing, candle buying, etc please do let us know. There is a lot of work to do but sharing it lessens the load.
Many of you will have seen that Sheila, who has been our devoted and tireless sacristan for over two decades, has been increasingly afflicted with a bad hip, and so has need to step down from this role. It is a reflective of the hours and effort she has put into her role that it has taken a team of 6 people to replace her. It is difficult to find some recognition worthy of her work, and she has already been awarded the Diocesan Medal, however, we are corresponding with Bishop's House on this point. Thank you Sheila!
APF Annual Mission Mass - The Mill Hill-APF annual Mass, who many of us collect for using the plastic red boxes, are having their annual Mass on Friday 23rd July, 7.30pm, St Joseph's, Bournemouth Rd, Poole, followed by a 20 minute film on their work in Pakistan.
25th July Parish Picnic - Please note the above date for our annual parish picnic at Sedgehill Manor, a delightful venue, with games for children with families, etc. Unfortunately the Bateson's will not be around to organise this so we are looking for volunteers to transport tables and others items from the church to the venue. If you can help with this please sign the list in the porch so we can be sure that the event can take place. Thanks.
Social Dates for your diary - Fish and Chips Quiz Supper: Friday 19th November
Prayer Intentions - Please pray especially for Daniel Hill; Sheila Berry; Mark McDonagh; Flora Barsby; Lucy Donnelly; Shelagh Caulfield; Sheila Humphreys; Christine Burton; Fr Bernard Jaffa of our diocese; Di Bradbury; Simone Rossano, and Jill Butler in your prayers. If you fall ill and need Holy Communion brought to you please let Fr Dylan know (Tel. 852125). Similarly, please let us know the names of sick people we should be praying for – please ask their permission for us to mention their names publicly. Thanks.
Thank you for your prayers and for the work of the Church. The collection last week came to £446.34. The collection for Sea Sunday came to: £280.82.
Any donations by cheque should be made payable to “Shaftesbury RC Parish PRCDTR”. Thank you.

Pope Benedict XVI’s Intentions for July 2010
General That in every nation of the world the election of officials may be carried out with justice, transparency and honesty, respecting the free decisions of citizens.
That Christians may strive to offer everywhere, but especially in great urban centres, an effective contribution to the promotion of education, justice, solidarity and peace. |
