Papal Benemerenti Presentation

Individuals who make an outstanding contribution to the parish, generally over many years can be put forward by the parish priest as worthy recipients of a Diocesan Medal which is generally presented by the Bishop. Without the contributions of these people, the parish would be a poorer place.

For even greater recognition, and extremely rarely, a Papal Benemerenti is presented. This is a medal, sanctioned by the Papal Delegate of the country concerned (so nationally recognised). For details on recipients since 1948, see the somewhat incomplete Wikipedia entry.

Sheila Ratcliffe has served the parish of St Edwards, nominally as sacristan, for over 30 years. Sadly, during 2010, she was forced to retire on grounds of ill health. Her place was taken by no fewer than four individuals which perhaps goes some way to explaining the inadequacy of the title 'sacristan'.

Sheila was presented with her medal by Fr Dylan after Mass on 27th February 2011.
